UAB at ST. JOSEPH'S (-5')

By Andy Fanelli, Featured Handicapper

Wow, UNC showed everyone a little something last night as they opened the can of whip ass on San Diego State. I was flat-out wrong!

I will get back into the college basketball tournament tomorrow through Sunday, but tonight I have a NBA play that is screaming "bet me, bet me!"

Time to get back on the winning side of things for this Wednesday gaming card, and I do so in the NBA.

On the surface the -5 1/2 points the St. Joe's Hawks are being asked to cover tonight in their opening-round game in the NIT seems like it might be a little too many when you consider the visiting UAB Blazers like to push the tempo and score 82.5 points per game which happens to lead the AAC, but the home team does have a few things going for themselves tonight on Hawk Hill that I think warrants a play on the Hawks as the chalk.

St. Joseph's can also score the basketball with their key three players - Xzayvier Brown, Rasheer Fleming, and Erik Reynolds II - all posting 14.9 points per game or better, and they should have a successful night on their home floor against a Blazers' defense that is not very good to put it nicely.

The Hawks hold opponents to 68.6 points per game, and I believe after their semifinals flame-out over the weekend in the Atlantic Ten tournament Coach Lange's team will view this second chance at continuing their season a little more enthusiastically than Coach Kennedy's Blazers who were 40 minutes away from playing in the Big Dance on Sunday when they held a 3-point lead at the break on the Memphis Tigers in the AAC title game and also were down by only a basket with 7 minutes remaining before sputtering in a 12-point loss.

I wonder what's the motivation of the visitors who have to fly to Philly midweek and play in the NIT rather than in the Big Dance tomorrow or Friday?

Finally, if you are looking for a divine intangible, today is St. Joseph's Day on the Catholic Calendar. Do you think St. Joe's is going to lose on their Feast Day? I don't!

The Hawk will Never Die! Lay it with Joey's this Wednesday at Hagan Arena.

Dayton (-1) at FLORIDA ATLANTIC

By Chris Jordan, Featured Handicapper

Took a breather from the college ranks last night and won an 800♦ play on the Lakers, who beat the Spurs by 16.

Tonight I have something stronger in College Hoops, as it's time to dance.

I toyed with the San Diego State-North Carolina game, but that's a game that has two teams out to prove something. For me, I don't have a problem with the Tar Heels getting in, only the optics of Bubba Cunningham's involvement.

The real value tonight is between Saint Francis and Alabama State, and I'm going to make some money with this winner.

I'm tired of hearing about people complaining about the teams who made it and didn't make it, the most pissed off team in Division I basketball should be the Dayton Flyers.

They're the No. 1 team in their region of the NIT field, yet because of the first quatro round in the dance on Tuesday and Wednesday, and some high school state basketball games on Friday and Saturday, the Flyers have to open the tournament on the road.

Dayton was third in the Atlantic 10 with a 12-6 record, and I wouldn't have been mad if the Flyers made the dance in front of San Diego State.

The 22-win Flyers visit Florida Atlantic (18-15), which finished fifth in the American Athletic Conference this season. And let's be real, this is a far cry from the Owls team that made the national semis a couple years back.

Coach Anthony Grant once again has a competitive squad, one that could make a deep run in this tournament with an impressive offense that ranks first in the Atlantic 10 in 3-point shooting (.355, 258 of 726), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.45), and third in free-throw percentage (.746, 510 of 684) and turnover margin (1.44).

Dayton will play with a chip on its shoulder and will win this game on the road.

Stanford was an easy grab last night, as it routed Cal State Northridge in the opening round of the NIT.

Tonight I'm in the play-in round of the Dance, as this clash between American and Mount St. Mary's is too good to pass up. I love the number, and when you read what I have to say about this one, you'll understand why my metrics tell me much more than experts that have these teams looking eerily similar.

As all the non-conference postseason tournaments get underway tonight, it's time to lock in and focus on the gameplan. Have your bankroll ready, as we bet proportionately and build towad the NBA Playoffs and MLB action.

If you haven't gotten your package deal, there is no better day to do so.

My free winner for Wednesday is the Orlando Magic plus the points at home against the Houston Rockets.

Orlando has been one of the strangest teams to decipher all season, but down the home stretch I'm going to try to do a deep dive each time it takes the court.

Sitting eighth in the Eastern Conference, the Magic have too much work to do to guarantee themselves a spot in the first-round of the playoffs, but they can grab the seventh seed, which is the top spot in the play-in round.

And since Orlando is finally healthy, I can see it playing some of its best basketball over the final few weeks.

The Magic have covered three straight and return home after a five-game trip that ended with an impressive 108-103 win at conference-leading Cleveland. They took three of the five away from Orlando, including a win over the Bucks in Milwaukee.

Confidence is brewing and this is a good time to focus on the Magic every time they play. I'll take them tonight.

Detroit at MIAMI (218)

With 3 winners over the last 4 days, Big Mike is getting his mojo back. Last night I told you Kent State was a live underdog in their NIT game at St. Bonaventure, and the Golden Flashes dominated the second half running away with a 19-point outright win.

Tonight we head to Dayton for this Musketeers-Longhorns showdown.

All about adding another winning day to the run. Late-night dance winner on the docket for Wednesday.

Wednesday night's freebie is to play the Under in Miami where the Heat will host the Pistons in NBA action.

Detroit has held Under the total in their last pair of games, and in 5 of their last 6 games overall. The Pistons are also Low in 8 of their last 12 games overall.

Miami comes into this one having failed to reach the 100-point plateau in each of their last 3 games, and they are on a 7-2 Under run for their last 9 games played this year.

This will be the last of 4 regular season meetings between the teams with 2 of the first 3 landing Over the total, but that one Under did come in the lone meeting in Miami, and the Under is still 6-4 the last 10 times the teams have faced each other, with 3 of the past 4 at the Kaseya Center landing Under the total.

Go with the Low in the Pistons-Heat for this Wednesday night.
